DeKalb Community Hospital Celebrates National Hospital Week

May 09, 2008

SMITHVILLE- DeKalb Community Hospital is celebrating Hospital Week this week, and their theme is “Where Healing Happens Every Day.”

On May 12, 1921, America celebrated its first National Hospital Day. Fittingly held on Florence Nightingale's birthday (she had died 11 years earlier at the age of 90), it provided a window of opportunity for hospitals to capture the trust of their communities. The event spread across the country and was expanded to National Hospital Week in 1953. Today, the annual celebration continues to be held during the week of the legendary nurse's birthday, a symbol of her lasting impact on health care.

DeKalb Community Hospital is one of the largest employers in DeKalb County. The hospital has over 400 staff between their 2 facilities – DeKalb Community Hospital in Smithville and Stones River Hospital in Woodbury. During this week, hospital staff in Smithville, TN will be honored at the hospital’s picnic. The hospital also has many other internal events planned for the week to celebrate their staff including contests and an ice cream social.
